9. Trim - rake boards and louvers:
Before we install the rake boards or gable trim, we must install blocks or blocking
(1" x  4" x 4") in between the battens just below the top of the roof sheathing.

Nail the blocks through the boarding and into the rafter, so the nails won't be seen on the inside of the shed.

Note: Make the blocks from scrap left over from window cut-outs.

At this point we also install the louvers or vents in the gable walls. Install the louvers and the louver trim with 11/4" box nails. The louvers or vents are installed by nailing through the trim made from batten strips, on all 4 sides, with 11/4" box nails or batten nails.

Now we are ready to install our rake, or gable trim boards. You can use spikes (12d or 16d nails) to nail on the rakes, but remember to keep your nails up where they will go into the rafter and not be seen on the inside of the shed.
Nail through the blocking and the boarding underneath it, into the rafter.

The rake boards are the 1" x 5" boards with a square cut on one end, and an angle cut on the other.

Note: Install the rake boards flush with the top of the roof sheathing, and with the angle cut at the peak in line with the angle cut on the rafter behind it.

Make sure to line up the angle cut at the peak with the angle cut on the rafter to insure a nice, clean looking joint when you install the other rake board.

The angle cut on the rake boards is the same angle as the angle cut on the rafters.

Nail the rakes into the fascia boards with 8d nails.

10. Windows and doors:
Next we install the windows and doors.

Install the windows by nailing through the window trim and the boarding into the framing behind it.

Set the door(s) into the opening(s).

Once you have the door in the opening with the proper amount of space around it so it will function properly, you can fasten the hinges to the shed with 2" #12 phillips head screws.

Once the door is functioning properly, we can install the handle (note) new handle not shown

11. Battens:
Now the rest of the battens can be installed using the 11/4" box nails. Install the battens so they cover all the vertical joints in the boarding. Use your level to keep them straight.

Install the battens tight to the trim around the window and tight to the fascia boards.

The battens should be flush with the bottom of the vertical boarding all the way around the shed.
