How To Build a Garden Shed
| 9. Trim - rake boards and louvers: Before we install the rake boards or gable trim, we must install blocks or blocking (1" x 4" x 4") in between the battens just below the top of the roof sheathing.
| At this point we also install the louvers
or vents in the gable walls. Install the louvers and the louver trim
with 11/4" box nails. The louvers
or vents are installed by nailing through the trim made from batten
strips, on all 4 sides, with 11/4" box nails or batten nails.
Now we are ready to install our rake,
or gable trim boards. You can use spikes (12d or 16d nails) to nail
on the rakes, but remember to keep your nails up where they will go into
the rafter and not be seen on the inside of the shed.
Note: Install the rake boards flush with the top of the roof sheathing, and with the angle cut at the peak in line with the angle cut on the rafter behind it.
10. Windows and doors:
| Once the door is functioning properly, we can
install the handle (note)
new handle not shown
| 11. Battens: Now the rest of the battens can be installed using the 11/4" box nails. Install the battens so they cover all the vertical joints in the boarding. Use your level to keep them straight.
